Answer

When mammary gland tumors become ulcerated, they become infected and necrotic - the smell you are noticing is a combination of bacterial infection and dead, rotting tissue. The only appropriate treatment is surgical removal of the diseased glands. Oral antibiotics may control some of the infection, but that will do nothing for the tissue necrosis that is occurring as the tumor continues to grow to a larger size than what the blood vessels can support.

surgery unfortunately is not an option due to age of cat(19 yrs)so would an antibiotic help with the odour problem?also metacam?thank you

Answer

As I mentioned above, "Oral antibiotics may control some of the infection, but that will do nothing for the tissue necrosis that is occurring as the tumor continues to grow to a larger size than what the blood vessels can support." - This means that some of the smell may be reduced, but there's a chance that the antibiotics will only help by a small amount. Metacam can help make her more comfortable, but it can be harsh on the kidneys of a senior cat. It should be given no more than twice per week.

sorry to harp on,but last time our vet gave an antibiotic injection as opposed to oral antibiotic.presumably they are much the same thing

Accepted Answer

Antibiotics by either route will act similarly in this situation.
