Can you please explain what happens when the episodes occur? Do you know what words you want to say and just can't say them? Or do you have trouble finding the words?

How long has this been occuring? Are you on any medication?

Thank you for your patience in answering my questions. After reading the side effects for Zoloft, difficulty in speaking was one listed. Have you just begun this medication recently?

Hello Kelstar, Thank you for writing to JustAnswer Health. It would be important for you to tell your psychiatrist about this, or to have a neurological evaluation. With severe depression and some other mental illnesses there is a condition called Thought Blocking where what you are describing occurs. You may need an increase in your antidepressant, or another class of antidepressant. Worst case scenario would be a TIA (transient ischemic attack) or what is sometimes called a "mini stroke". It would be very unusual for this to occur repeatedly and in the same way though. There are cases where young females, especially if they are on birth control or hormones for other reasons, are obese or have other risk factors for cardiovascular disease and strokes, to actually have stokes, even at such a young age. Again, your symptoms do not sound like a typical "mini stroke" but I would still take this seriously and see a doctor ASAP so that at least a neuro exam and your blood work can be done to rule out a critical problem. If you have questions or comments please feel free to reply.
