Question

My guinea pig recently recovered from upper respiratory congestion after taking a week's worth of Baytril antibiotics. Today he was making strange hiccup-cough sounds and breathing quickly/loudly. After leaving him alone for a few hours, I came back to find him making loud, frog-like, throaty sounds with every breath--he sounds like someone with a sore throat. Is it likely that the upper respiratory issues have resurfaced, or could it be another problem?

Hello and thanks for researching this very important question...I am sorry that no one online last night felt able to discuss this with you.

Guinea Pigs have very weak and sensitive immune systems, compared to other animals. They cannot make their own vitamin C from their body chemicals, so they need to have it added to their diet every day.

Please continue giving this pet 25 mg of superior-quality vitamin C every day (ask your pharmacist which children's liquid people come back for most).

It seems that your pet's sinus infection has traveled to his lungs.

When a viral/bacterial infection travels from the sinuses to the lungs, a GP will develop a croupy/crackly sound in the chest during breathing. The lungs fill up with pus and other fluids, and breathing is difficult. Coughs deep in the chest can sound like squeaky hiccups

Please return to the veterinary office to find out if he should be put on additional antibiotic and supportive therapy.

Fungal spores can likewise take advantage of a sick Guinea Pig. The vet or your local pet store can sell you a digestive supplement that will help to kill off a fungal infection. Ask for Probiocin or Benebac for small pets.

These new symptoms are quite serious, so do follow up with your veterinarian as soon as you can.

If you need additional support at this time, please "Reply", otherwise I thank you in advance for your "Accept" and will hold a Good Thought for you both.
