Question
I was put on amlodipine besylate and after two weeks, no decrease in my blood pressure, my right knee to my ankle became hot, painful and swollen. I was advised to go off the med. and take zyrtec, which I am doing. How can I decrease the swelling and pain in my leg until this effect ends?

Hello; Thank you for writing in today. I want to provide you with the best possible, so I do have a few questions. Have you been seen by your doctor, or were you advised to go off the medication via phone? Any renal issues or history of gout? Any history of blood clot disorder? Any other symptoms in your leg or feet, such as pale color, blue color, tingling? Please let me know. Lisa

I was advised to go off the med. and begin zyrtec over the phone. No renal issues or gout ever. No history of blood clot disorder but I did injure the right knee two weeks ago in a fall. I only had a bruise and it has been gone a couple days now. No color changes or tingling.

When did you stop the med? When did you start the Zyrtec? Any improvement?

I had already had the med. yesterday when they told me to stop taking it and the zyrtec did help but I am in pain and it swells again when I use my leg.
Accepted Answer
Hello; Thank you for writing in today. At this point, I would insist on having this evaluated. I realize that no one wants the "go to your provider" answer; however, it is necessary sometimes. I will explain my rationale. In your case, it is possible that this is an adverse reaction to the medication; however, this would be a more unusual presentation. I'm not saying this is impossible, but I have another concern. Due to the location, heat, swelling, pain, and history of a fall, I would concerned about a possible blood clot. I do not mean to alarm you; however, I do feel that ruling this out is very important. When a person falls or injures a leg, certain things can happen. For example, injuries can cause a phenomenon known as Virchow's Triad. This essentially can lead to blood clots. Even though the fall occurred a couple weeks ago, there is still a possibility. Although this may be a reaction to medication, I think ruling out a clot is also very important. At this point, you can continue the interventions you have tried; however, I would recommend evaluation when possible. I hope this explains. If you have any additional questions, concerns, or need additional clarification, please let me know. Lisa
