Question

My lips are red, puffy and have bumps that "wheep" clear liquid. (very small to the eye) The color is so red like I ate a cherry freezer pop. They feel sun burned. It will go away after 2 days or so and then come back. I only seem to have this issue in Sept - Feb. Started 07 - 09. I have had a herpes test and came back negative. I went to the regular doctor, allergist and dermatologist and no one knows what it is. I am allergic to a few fruits but that is all.

Dear XXXXXXX, Thank you for writing to JustAnswer with your concern. Do you regularily apply anything to your lips? Did the allergist think your allergies might be related to this? What have you tried so far for this? (my computer is going to run out - please reply and if I don't answer you immediately, I will a little later this evening)

Hello I have only used Aquaphor or chapstick in regaular flavor. But, I use this all year long. And I only have issues in 07-09 in Fall and winter it seems. The allergist said it could be OAS or Angioedema. But, I don't know what I am allergic to or what pollens are out now. My test didn't come back as positive for bananas or apples but the OAS list has those items on it if you are allergic to certain pollens. Benadryl does not help anymore. I can take a steroid but when I go off it I seem to react soon after. My lips just burn and hurt and the Aquaphor seems to provide a little relief. I have to keep them very moist. The spots on my lips are very small (sometimes they leak clear fluid and sometimes not) Let me know if you need more info. I am here 8-5 eastern time. Thanks, Michelle

Please excuse the delay. I don't have constant internet service as I normally do. I'd suggest you stop using the products and start using non-lanolin containing products. You can find these in most health food and supplement stores. Burt's Bees products do not have lanolin and have several things you can choose from. Some people are allergic to lanolin, and as it is made from petroleum, some believe that it blocks the skin's normal oils. Burt's Bee products are in most grocery and drug stores, but there is also a web site with the products. See: http://www.burtsbees.com/natural-products/lips-lip-care/ If you are in a dry environment you may want to consider the frequent use of a humidifier (at least at night as you sleep). I have an article that guides one on finding the most appropriate type of humidifier for various purposes. If you would like a copy of the article, just let me know. If you are not getting Riboflavin, a B vitamin, it can cause a condition called Chelitis. Normally this appears as an inflammation cracking to the lateral edges of the lips and mouth. Riboflavin is added to bread, but you may still want to consider a supplement. I'd suggest a multiple B vitamin that includes ribolflavin and vitamin C as well. Vitamin C is needed for connective tissue health. The essential fatty acids are certain fats that our body can not make on it's own so we must obtain them from our food. People are often lacking in these. They are necessary for the central and peripheral nervous system as well as for lubrication of the skin and other components of the body. If you are not a consumer of cold water fish or flax seed you could be low in them. You can increase your consumption of cold water fish or add flax seed to cereal and smoothies, or you may want to consider taking capsules of them if there is a possibility you are low in these. I hope this helps. If you have questions or comments please feel free to reply. Also, write back in a month or so and let us know how you are doing if possible. Good luck

I only have these symptoms in certain months and use the same exact items on my lips every day of the week. However in the summer I do not have these issues so I don't see how what I use on my lips would have any effect. As far as Chelitis my lips are not cracked or dry in any way. They are red and feel sunburned with little red bumps that feel moist sometimes. I live in NJ and it is the fall time. I have a humidifier. None of the above seems to fit what I have. Again, this only happens during the Sept - Feb.

Have you considered a HEPA air filter? IF the problem was pollen this might help you tremendously

Answer

Have you considered if there is anything that you are eating at only this type of year? There are different types of HEPA filters, and there are portable ones. I'll give you a web site that has a lot of info on it. So if you took one to work with you (depending on the type of work you do) and at home, it might make a significant difference. Also if you are not a person that washes hair daily that can help wash pollen out of the hair. Especially those that have sinus allergies can use nasal lavage or the neti pot to wash pollen out of the sinuses, and this helps to remove pollen that very easily gets into the sinues when breathing. Here is an article that might possibly give you some ideas to try: http://life.gaiam.com/gaiam/p/Natural-Relief-for-Allergy-Symptoms.html This link has filters, HEPA are considered the best, but they are most expensive: http://www.gaiam.com/p2p/searchResults.do?method=view&search=basic&keyword=air+filter&sortby=bestSellers&page=1 Here are some less expensive small HEPA air filters: http://www.amazon.com/Holmes-HAP412N-U-Hepa-Type-Tower-Purifier/dp/B000BX56YQ This one can be used in the car: http://www.allergybuyersclubshopping.com/roomaid.html

I am very boring and eat the same things all the time. (same breakfast etc). Isn't a neti pot for congestion? I am never stuffy or show any form of allergies. Not stuffy, no itchy or watery eyes. Just my lips. I wash my hair every morning. I wash my bedding as well. I am a very neat and tidy person. My sinuses don't seem to be the issue just my lips.

This link shows many other people just like me with this same issue some people seem to say they have dry cracked lips or itchy lips that I believe is a different issue. Please look at this I believe it will help you understand.

Answer

IF you are allergic to pollen, and in your case the pollen caused the lip symptoms (which is possible) then using a neti pot to get the pollen out of your sinuses, might help. I'll take a look at your link.

I was tested by my allergist for all pollens, food, pets etc and they advised I wasn't allergic to any pollen. Could I be allergic and the test came up negative on my skin? I was tested 10 days ago.

Answer

I guess I did not understand your above post, I thought you meant you were allergic to pollen. If benadryl helped for awhile, it seems to indicate an allergy is likely. Cortisone works at decreasing inflammation. Inflammation can also be cause by stress. Your pattern of problem with this makes it not seem likely to be stress related, but mind and body can do unusual things. Do you have any problems with anxiety (don't be insulted, I'm not insinuating you do, I am just asking, as I was with the bathing) I read the first page of posts, but I'm not sure what I was supposed to take from it. If I were you, I'd still go for the lanolin free products, unless you found that things got worse. My battery is going out, I'll get back to you shortly, but feel free to reply in the mean time.

I can try the lanolin free items but I just dont see why I would have the trouble pop up during only a few months. Thats why my allergist thought it was OAS but I didnt show up as allergic to anything. Steroids work. But when Im done with the script it comes back. Benadryl worked last fall but not really this year and I was even give xyzal and no luck. As far as anziety I was on xanax and weened myself off it. But, in 07 and 08 I was on the xanax and 09 Im not. So, dont see the relation there. I'm not really stressed more then the next person I would think. Thats how I was able to get myself off it. :) I'm not offended by anything just trying to find the solution to my issue. Been almost 3 years and doctors are baffled.

Please spell out what OAS means. This is not a common medical abbreviation and I don't know what it means. It would be normal for you not to understand the "why" behind the suggestions. That is why you are asking professionals for opinions. Here is one possible dynamic behind your symptoms. It could be possible that you are more stressed or anxious in the fall time. You may not be able to notice it at this time. Symptoms are more likely to appear in the body when one is not aware of an issue. This is extremely common to all of us. One possible proof is the corticosteriods helping the symptoms. When one is under prolonged stress or anxiety the body eventually uses up the corticosteroids that it produces in more excess when one is under the stress response. There is a gradual weakining of the body's normal mechanisms including the immune system, or the ability to fight off disease or to keep the body functioning at it's highest level. If one stays under prolonged stress for a long period, eventually there can be more symptoms, either physical or mental or both. One solution is to do some self evaluation. For example journaling your daily experiences to gain insight, seeing a therapist or a life coach This cut off again, I'm not finished.

Answer

Prolonged stress in one person may lead to a certain illness. In another person it may lead to something else. This depends on the genetics of the person or where ever their weakest system is. Persons that are unhappy or think they have to put up with certain conditions in their lives, are often the individuals that end up with multiple physical illnesses. In other words, although medication is sometimes the answer, there may be other answers as well. Most Doctors will agree. So it is possible, that if for some reason your immunity is decreased in the fall, then you might react more to the lanolin. But again, I am not sure it is the lanolin, but I do know that it is a problem for many people. Seeing a therapist is one way to gain a different perspective on one's life. Life coaches (they don't require certification yet - so you have to make sure if you ever choose to see a life coach that they have had training on their own). Life coaches have a method of helping you evaluate each area of your life and surprizingly there may be certain areas and issues that you are not aware of that you can be made aware of and develop goals and methods to deal with them or these things that you were not even aware of. There is a web site that explains Stress and Anxiety and the physiology of how they effect our systems over time in more depth. I'll give you the link: http://www.helpguide.org/ (Looking under the topics of Stress and Anxiety and even Panic you'll find a great description of how these states change the body) The above site also provides links to methods to change your life and methods to decrease the stress and/or anxiety. Even if a person's anxiety is completely biological certain measures can still help you. These are certain deep breathing techniques, visualization, exercise, and of course yoga is the oldest method known to get anxiety and other physical and mental issues under control or released. By the way, you sound like you are aware and intelligent, I am just giving you some information that is partially scientific and partially related to 25 years of working with people both purely from a medical perspective and also as a therapist, and recently information I have been studying (life coaching) One other thing - you mentioned that you had to keep your lips moist at all times. Make sure that is not a nervous habit. I have heard before that that leads to chapped lips (constant moistening of the lips with salivia). I know your problem isn't chapped lips, but still, if you do do this by any chance, it is likely not helping the situation.

Hi, I will look into everything you posted. Although I don't feel more stressed certain times of the year. And I was living in a different place in 07 then 08 and 09. So, my environment has changed for the better. I went and purchased burt's bees honey lip balm and read the side of it after. It contains lanolin. This is the ingredient you said I could be allergic to correct? Every one of their lip balms has lanolin in them. (see ingredients) can you comment on the lanolin please. I'd really like to try something new. Im not sure if Im keeping my lips moist by a nervous habit. I just reapply when they are dry.

Accepted Answer

Wow, that is quite a mistake I made. Actually the ingredient that causes the allergies and problems is sodium laurel sulfate, not lanolin. I'm so glad you caught me on this. Lanolin is okay depending on how it is processed, it is an oil from sheep skin, it is sodium laurel sulfate that is the probelem for many people. Here Burt's Bee's explains how it does not use sodium laurel sulfate and pertroleum products (but my original information about sodium laurel sulfate is not from Burt's Bees - Sodium Laurel Sulfate is tied to canker sores or "recurrent minor aphthous ulcers".) http://www.burtsbees.com/c/root-green-products-environment-sustainability-burt-s-bees.html Again, although what you feel about yourself is important, there are ways to evaluate yourself on deeper levels where you might realize things that you are not consciously aware of. People tend to get to this stage of evaluation when they are ready to. Some people will start when they have a minor health or emotional crisis, while some people choose never to do any inner work. In nearly every case, if done by an intelligent individual and when they are ready, rewards will come from doing this type of evaluation; new insight into one's self can be life changing.
