Question

My cat, a neutered male - approximately 2/3 years old, started biting after we had had him for about 6 months. When we got him from the vet, he thought the cat was 1 1/2 to 2 years old and we've had him 1 1/2 years. He only bites me, never my husband nor anyone els;, it is a sneak attack from the back or side. He bites hard enough to draw blood at times, quickly runs to hide under the couch, and when I approach the couch he runs to the basement. Otherwise he is a "good" cat -- never ever uses anywhere except his litter box, eats dry food, doesn't purr at all, and doesn't lay in the sun like most cats we've had over the years. Any suggestions for stopping this behavior?

Optional Information

Pet's Sex: Male
Pet's Age: 3

Already Tried:
Shutting him in the basement and calling him a bad cat! He knows he's been naughty because he stays away from me for a day or two afterwards. One bite was severe enough that I got infection and had to be on antibiotics. This is not fun!

Hi,

This is going to be a difficult problem to fix. The best way to try to change aggressive behavior is to recognize the signs that an attack is coming and stop it before it happens. Obviously, If your cat is sneaking up on you, you aren't going to be able to know ahead of time. Here is a link to a page about aggression in cats:

What I would recommend doing is to have your veterinarian file the kitty's eye teeth down so they aren't sharp anymore. This is painless to the cat (its done under anesthesia), and it will make the bites much less painful to you. They usually can't break the skin once this has been done. I've known several cats that this has been done to and its worked on all of them. (One of them actually quit biting after she had this done.)
