Question

Hello guys, I'm looking at a '92 inboard ski boat with a 5.7l indmar engine. I spoke to the guy who is selling it and he says there is a small leak from the riser gasket. I'm not sure if he knows how long it has been doing so, it may by his own admission have been a while. How much could new manifolds and risers cost to replace and if it has been leaking for a while is there a chance that permanent damage has been done? I'm wondering if this is a deal breaker or not. The rest of the baot is in ship shape and the engine has done around 500 hrs. If i view is there anything i could watch out for when testing? Also, the guy selling tells me that when started after sitting for a while it runs a little bit rough until warmed up. Could this be an indication of damage, it runs fine when warm?

Answer

Hi,
The manifolds and risers could cost somewhere around 400.00 per side. The only way it could cause damage is if it where leaking into engine but does not sound like the case. They probably just need new gaskets. As far as the engine running rough when cold or setting awhile and running fine warm, you might want to check the choke it could be coming off to slow. You might want to do compression check just for piece of mind.It sound s like the engine is in good shape other than the leak at manifold.
I hope my answer has helped you
Thank you
Rick

Thanks Rick,

You think it's safe to assume no damage then? Is water damage something that would be almost instant, or something that may build up over time. If the engine is running well, reving well and pulling well at the minute do you think that its not suffered due tothe drip (the owner described it as 'tiny').

Hi,
I would say that there is no damage in the engine. It sounds like the leak is external, so probably gaskets. The water damage is over time unless you have a major leak into engine which is not your case.I feel you will be fine.
Thanks Rick
