Hi,
There are a few different problems that could cause these symptoms. You are correct that one of them is that he could have swallowed some sort of foreign object that is stuck in his esophagus or even the roof of his mouth. Another possibility is an oral issue such as dental disease, ulcers in the mouth, etc. Disorders with the esophagus could potentially cause this as well. Ingestion of a toxin is yet another possibility. I would recommend taking him to see your vet as soon as you are able because of these symptoms and the fact that he seems lethargic as well. There is unfortunately, no way for me to narrow it down for you on-line, your kitty needs an examination and possibly testing.
