Question
We have a 2006 Jayco 213 Feather Light Travel Trailer. My problem lies with the side out, this past year its been acting like a shaft was slipping, and if you feather the rocker switch you could get the slide out all the way out or in. My problem it developed this past weekend, was the slide out unit went all the way out, but wouldn't come in. It acted dead, no power, nothing. So I got the crank out, started cranking about 4-6 inches, I thought why not try the rocker switch again, surprising it worked, I was able to get it back home. When at home I tryed to move the slider out to winterize it, the slider wouldn't work again, uning the crank again, the slider worked once again when I pushed on it. So whats' wrong?

Hi: Thanks for coming to Just Answer with your question. My name is Randall and perhaps I can assist you with this. It sounds like a battery issue. Have you had them checked recently to see what the reserve capacity is? Are they full of water? There are other possibilites, but lets begin with the most likely. Get back to me and lets see where we are. All the best, R.J.

With only one battery the slide will tend to labor. DC motors used on slide rooms are large users of amperage. I always recommend two batteries with any coach having a slide room. Another problem you may be experiencing is with the seals becoming weathered and as they harden then resist the room moving. Even when new, they drag against the room as it moves and resist the room moving. These need to have slide trim lubricant used each time the room is moved, including the top seal and the bottom. This makes it much easier to move the room. The rails with the racking gears need to be lubricated with dry lubricant at least once each year. if the room is out of adjustment, it will tend to drag more. All these things create heat in the motor. Most slide motor circuits have a resettable breaker that opens up when it gets too hot and closes back down when it cools. This is so you protect the motor, but don't have to keep replacing the fuses. This situation is made worse if they used a wire size that is really not adequate to handle the amperage. As voltage drops, the amperage increases and so does the heat in the wiring. Try to always run the side room in or out with the shore cord plugged in, especially with only one battery. You could be losing the motor, but this is pretty rare on that new a unit. If you get a bad spot on the armature, it can do what you describe. A bad switch can cause this as well if the contacts are burned. Try hooking up an additional battery first and lube everything as described and see if that doesn't help. If not, if you have a VOM and know how to use it, we can run some tests.
Get back to me and let me know what you find. All the best, R.J.

I've been reading up on slide out motors from other Rv'ers, they all seem to think that the actulators are under powered. When we're dry camping I use a 3500 watt generator, tho, the only thing its used for is the air conditioner and the slide out. I have never tried to use battery only for the slide out, only when its plugged into a power source. The manufacture of our camper Jayco, says to never use any type of lubricants to the slider channels, only to wipe with a damp cloth. So do I use a lubricant as you recommend? My neighbor is an electrian, he used his VOM meter and checked out the rocker switch, says its fine.

I like the dry lube made by Thetford who makes the toilets used on most RVs. They also make a good seal lubricant. Another thing that I should have mentioned is to clean and re-tighen any chassis grounds as these can cause high resistance and cut down on the available voltage. Perhaps your neighbor can take an amperage reading for you at the slide motor and see if it is unusually high or the voltage is not what is should be. Who made this slide system? Powergear has had some erratic slide systems due to bad grounds on the modules themselves and have a newer style out as a replacement kit that has fixed some of these problems. Usually in that case the room will go only one way and not the other. Might be worth looking into. I'd be interested in what your neighbor finds and his take on this. He should be very familiar with many of the things I've described to you. Erratic problems are the hardest to find sometimes as they don't always give you the same reading or react the same way. Let me know what you find. All the best, R.J.
