Question

Pete. I need your help again please. My 1997 saab 900 s convertible 2.3L NON-turbo automatic has been fine since we last spoke (seemed to be a vacum problem) However today my wife calls and says she was sitting at a red light (on a slight incline street) and it just Quit on her (check engine, battery light came on) But she put it in park, shut it off then it started right back up and nothing today since. Now whats up or might be coming at me???

Hello sir and thanks for using Just Answer. If it randomly dies like that, but restarts everytime without any trouble ignition switch comes to mind.I actually just recently had to change one in my wife's 97 900s. She was having the same problem, just randomly dying but would restart everytime. The lights(check engine, battery) coming on is normal if the engine dies, however they should and probably went out once the car was running again. Start the car and wiggle the key a little bit even pushing it towards the off position a little. Often this will cause the car to die out. If not sometimes you can just tell turning the key on and off that it doesn't feel right. A crank sensor, fuel pump, distributor problem would usually have some other problems running and or not restarting. I've also seen purge valves stick open sometimes which can cause a random stall.I would see if fiddling with the ignition switch kills the car, if not, maybe unhooking the purge valve could be a place to start. Purge valve is not as common as an ignition switch but cheaper and easier to get to.A sticking purge valve can cause a big vacuum leak and cause a stall. The purge valve is under the intake's plastic removable air plenum to the left with 2 hoses going to it and an electrical connectior. You could just unplug the electrical connector, this will not hurt the car but WILL TURN YOU CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. Without changing the valve, this is the next best way to test. I would go with these two suspects, keep tabs on the problem and let me know how you make out. Thanks and Good Luck.
