How do you change the R/H front Wheel bearing on a 2000 9-5 Aero?

To remove

IMPORTANT: The bearing is destroyed on removal.

  1. Undo the hub center-nut when the car is standing on all four wheels.
  2. Raise the car. If a jack is used, the car must be supported on axle stands.
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4. Remove the hub center-nut completely.
  5. Push back the brake piston using adjustable pliers. Remove the brake caliper from the spindle housing and hang it on the spring with a piece of suitable steel wire.

  1. Remove the brake disc retaining bolts and then the brake disc.
  2. Remove the ABS sensor retaining screw and then lift off the sensor.

  1. Remove the nut on the outer steering link and then remove the steering link using puller 89 96 696.
  2. Remove the bolts securing the steering swivel member to the spring strut. Put the bracket for the cable to the ABS sensor and brake hose to one side.

  1. Remove the bolt securing the steering swivel member ball-joint to the steering swivel member.

  1. Remove the screws to the disc back-plates through the openings in the hub and then remove the disc back-plates.
  2. Remove the holder for the ABS sensor.
  3. Tap out the drive shaft from the hub using a plastic hammer.

  1. Remove the steering swivel member.
  2. Press off the hub using tool 89 96 704 (KM-500-5)

  1. Remove the circlip.

  1. Press out the bearing using tool 89 96 704 (KM-500-2 and KM-500-3).

To fit

  1. Lubricate the bearing surface on the steering swivel member with Molycote Rapid G and press in anew bearing using tool 89 96 704 (KM-500-4 and KM-500-5).

  1. Fit the circlip with the opening pointing downwards.

  1. Press on the hub using tool 89 96 704 (KM-500-3 and KM-500-5).
  2. Fit the drive shaft in the hub and push it home with a new hub center-nut. IMPORTANT: A new hub center-nut should always be fitted if it has been removed since the clamping force of the lock embossing will be reduced if refitted.

  1. Fit the holder for the ABS sensor and disc back-plates.

  1. Fit the steering swivel member ball-joint in the steering swivel member and the bolt securing the steering swivel member to the ball-joint. Fit the nut. Make sure that the bolt fits in the recess on the steering swivel member ball-joint. WARNING: Make sure that the journal on the ball-joint is protruding above the steering swivel member mounting.
  2. Press in the steering swivel member in the spring strut and fit the bracket for the ABS sensor cable and brake hose in place. Press the steering swivel member inwards and tighten the bolts securing the steering swivel member to the spring strut. Tightening torque 100 Nm (75 ft. lbs.) +45° .
  3. Tighten the bolt securing the steering swivel member to the steering swivel member ball-joint. Tightening torque 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.) .
  4. Fit the outer steering link to the steering swivel member and tighten the nut. Tightening torque 60 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) .

  1. Fit the ABS sensor.
  2. Fit the brake disc in place and tighten the brake disc retaining screw.

  1. Make sure that the brake piston is pressed back in the cylinder and then fit the brake caliper using locking compound 74 96 268 on the bolts to the steering swivel member. Tightening torque 110 Nm (80 ft. lbs.) .
  2. Fit the wheel. Tightening torque 120 Nm (90 ft. lbs.) . Lower the car and fit a new hub center-nut when the car is standing on all four wheels. Tightening torque 170 Nm +45°(123 ft. lbs. +45°) .
  1. The brake pedal to press out the pistons in the brake calipers.
