Answer

Hello XXXXXX, Welcome to Justanswer!

How many miles are on the truck?

The "trans failsafe prog" simply means that the tranmission controller has detected a fault in the control system. There are several different faults that can cause the transmission to go into failsafe mode. Without knowing the fault code number I am limited in the information that I can give you.

It is possible that low voltage can cause the transmission to go into failsafe mode. You would also have some other symptoms if that was the case. The first thing that you would probably notice is the message display under the spoeedometer usually will blink when you have a low voltage issue caused by a bad alternator. You can also have random electrical malfunctions. I am pretty sure that if you are not having any other electrical issues like dimmed lights that you do not have a bad alternator.

I would simply ask the dealer to check the charging system. This is a simple test and should only cost around $40 for them to do.

$2500 does not seem out of line to replace a transfer case. If that is in fact the problem, their price is in line with what most places would charge.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with

Thanks,

Todd

Hello,

Truck has 43,000 Miles. According to dealer the fault codes, etc. all point to the transfer case, they have also reported and heard back from Land Rover Technical service and they agree with the initial assessment. The message comes on sparitically so the truck is drivable, I am thinking of getting it back from dealer and going to another shop for second opinion.

Accepted Answer

If the tech line agrees with the dealer's diagnosis then they are probably correct. If you have any doubt about it I would definately recommend that you take it somewhere else for a second opinion. It certainly could be an electrical fault since it is intermittent so a second opinion could save you a lot of money.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with

Thanks,

Todd
