Question
I have alot of personal linens and decorations that friends quite often use. Recently a school needed extra linens for a large function and I agreed that they could use them for a charge since I would wash, press and set up for the function. The final charge was $556.00. Now they say to pay out any amount over $400 they need my SS# and a signed tax form stating that I am an independent contractor. I don't like to give out my SS# to just anyone and I don't think I am an independent contractor. Does this sound correct?

Hello XXXXXXXXXXX, Thank you for using Just Answer. The school, which in all probability is classified as a Non Profit is trying to protect itself and it's standing as a Non Profit. This is allowed. They need your SS# unless you have a EI# from the IRS to track the money spent by the organization. You will simply need to declare the money on your tax return and remember to keep any reciepts you have that show money you spent to earn the $556 (detergent, starch....and do not forget to log the mileage used on your vehicle if you delivered the linens to the school). You are correct to guard your SS#, but in this case you have offered a service and been paid for that service. According to the IRS this is what defines an independent contractor:"The general rule is that an individual is an independent contractor if you, the person for whom the services are performed, have the right to control or direct only the result of the work and not the means and methods of accomplishing the result." I sincerely hope this information is helpful,
