Question

My 1yr old Bernese Mnt dog was spayed today. They gave her pain meds but i do not think it was enough. She is not lethargic like they said she would be, and seems to be in pain. Is there anything I can give her to help, Xanax, Lorazapam Benaydryl, to help her sleep?

Answer

Thanks for the question XXXXXXXXXXX.

Sorry to hear your dog is in pain, sometimes this does happen after a spay but hopefully it will be transient and disappear after a day or so.

As to your present situation it would be dangerous to dose your dog with anything else particularly the drugs you mentioned as there could be an adverse interaction between them and the pain killers she already has in her system.

If the pain becomes intense you should contact the clinic where the spay was carried out as they will know their normal painkiller regime and will be able to advise you further. Sorry I cannot suggest anything more positive ...

If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.

I dont think think its life threatening but she is very uncomfortable. Is is possible that 100mg of Deramaxx is not enough for such a large breed dog?

Answer

Hello again,

The typical dose for Deramaxx administered to dogs is 1.5 to 2 mg per pound (3 to 4 mg/kg) every 24 hours orally. You can confirm this here : LINK

So if she weighs in the region of 50 kg then the range would be 150 mg to 200 mg.

How heavy is your dog?

She is 90 lbs so 40kg.

Accepted Answer

Hello again,

For a 90 lb dog the dose range would be between 135 and 180 mg.

So using my dose rates yes it is a bit of an under dose and more could be given.
