Question

I notice that my female cat often has very soft stools almost bordering on diarrhea (but she eats and goes very regularly) with a bit of very red bloody mucus. I see no change in her personality, no weight loss or lethargy, but I am starting to freak out about this. My cats are about 5 years old and they are strictly indoor animals. Any thoughts as to what might be going on?

Changed food from "Eukaneuba" to "Blue Buffalo" brand (weight management chicken and rice) as it is supposed to be the best food you can buy.

Answer

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear your cat is experiencing this problem, but by changing to Blue Buffalo, you made a very wise choice; it is an excellent food!

Fresh red mucusy blood in a soft or watery stool can be caused by various factors. Intestinal parasites, food allergies, ingestion of a non-food or toxic item, are all possibilities, and you can read more about this symptom, here:

Even though the Blue Buffalo is an excellent food, your cat may have developed an allergy to the protein source (meat) in the food. Natural Balance and Royal Canin are some of the manufacturers of 'limited ingredient diets' for cats which offer alternative meat and carb sources. However, I wouldn't advise making any food changes until you can have your cat evaluated in person by the vet, and a fecal analysis performed, to get a definite diagnosis and treatment of her current condition.

For the moment, feed her some bland foods like plain jarred baby food chicken containing no onion product or seasonings (Beechnut Stage 1 chicken and chicken broth is a good one) and/or plain boiled chicken breast, mixed with plain white rice and 1 tsp. fat free, plain, unflavored yogurt added to one small serving daily. This might help temporarily with her loose stools, if it is due to dietary reasons. If she has intestinal parasites or an intestinal infection, she will also need to be treated with medication from the vet.

I hope all will be well with your furry girl!

As she's an indoor cat, is there really any possibility that she's got parasites? Do you think it's likely that it's something fixable (as opposed to cancer)? Is the fact that the blood is bright red better that if it was dark red (from the upper GI tract)? Since she's still eating and drinking normally and acting like herself, is that a good sign that the problem is not too serious?

Sorry for all the questions, but she's my baby (I don't have kids).

Thanks so much for your help,

Sharon

Hi again, Sharon.

Please, no apologies necessary; I know you're concerned and she's your baby! : )

Yes, it's better that the blood is bright red and not dark/tarry which would indicate it's coming from the upper GI tract, and is already 'digested'. It's most likely something 'fixable', and if she were not feeling well, she wouldn't be eating, drinking and acting as usual, so don't worry needlessly until you get a definite diagnosis from the vet.

Indoor cats can get intestinal parasites and also fleas, as these are brought in on our shoes and pant legs. I know it's hard to believe, but it happened to MY cat, and I'm on the third floor of a condo! : )

Bring your furry girl and a fresh fecal sample to the vet ASAP, and then you'll know what's happening with her and she'll be treated to fix it.

Keep me posted on how she's doing and what the vet tells you, by clicking 'reply' at any time, okay? Thanks!

Cher

Thanks for your help...I can't believe your baby got parasites in a third floor condo, wow!
I hope that's the problem as I know it's very fixable.

I appreciate you thorough answer and I will get her into the vet soon.

I'm glad you think the problem is likely one that can be solved.

I'll let you know what I find out after her diagnosos.
