Question

Hello, I have a French Mastiff Brindle Mix. A male approximately 100 Lbs. He broke out earlier today about 10:00 Am with all these welts. They are primarily on his back and head. We gave him one tablet of Benadryl, gave him a bath and saturated his coat with Aloe Vera. The Bumps went away. They are back again. We have never had this problem with him before. What do you think?

Hello,

It sounds like your dog is having an allergic reaction. You're pretty low on the Benadryl, so you can up that quite a bit. The dosage in dogs is much higher than people and we give 1 mg/lb every 6-8 hours. I would give him 4 adult strength tablets (25 mg tablets) at a time.

It will often take 12-24 hours for the hives to fully resolve.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank You so very much. I just gave him one so three more on the way. I cleaned and sprayed around his bed area, and his kennel. I have not changed his diet and it does not appear that he got into anything. If he got bit by a bug would his skin puff up like this?

Answer

Yes, bug bites/ bee stings are a common cause of hives as well as muzzle/ ocular swelling in dogs.

My mastiff needs a bottle of benadryl in the summer as he constantly thinks bees are his friends and lets them land on his nose and sting him.

Great another Mastiff lover. But I never really seen a Mastiff as small as in your photo "kinda looks like a Kitty Staff. I just gave my bud his additional medicine. I will give him his next treat at 7:00am.

Thank You Again

Great Service I was really worried about my Buddy.

Answer

Yes, that is the ever elusive "Russian Blue Mastiff"- quite rare. The pictures only allow so many jpegs, not enough for Jericho and his big ol head. But Megatron fits perfectly.

You're very welcome, good luck with the "little" guy.
