Question

I had a blood blister on my pinkie for weeks. I finally couldn't resist the temptation and popped it with a sterile lancet. It bled continuously until it sealed back up. That was about a week ago. Yesterday it became red around it and painful. I also have had pain under my arm and just above my elbow on the inside of my arm (that area is red). At my OB appt. today (I am 38 weeks pregnant) she lanced the blister and applied an antibiotic cream. I also started on 500mgs of Keflex four times a day. Is this enough?? I am afraid of the infection going into my blood stream.

Greetings.

Yes, This antibiotic is good enough. As a matter of fact; the lancing is done in a sterile fashion and chance of infection is almost zero. Still an antibiotic is given to be on the highly cautionary side. So, please do not worry at all.

What about the pain radiating from my hand up my arm. It is very painful from the inside of my elbow up to my armpit. That is what worries me the most.

Answer

Hello,

That is inflammation of the lymphatics which goes from finger up to the arm pit. Once the swelling is lanced and has been drained of the fluid, this will get better in around 48-72 hours. Avoid hanging down of the arm. This will drain the lymphatics fast and improve the symptoms. A paracetamol (Tylenol) can be taken if the pain is significant.

It is pleasure and privilege assisting you.
