Question

Little Susie is a female calico tricolor 13 years old neutered cat. Almost two weeks ago began with some regurgitation, then actual vomiting liquid partly digested food, two to three times a day. Then started urinating on bathroom rug about every other day, which is not usual. Stools appear normal and formed. Ranitidine 37.5 mg a couple of times, not much effect if any. Was drinking more water for 3-4 days. Eats lean roast beef and a can of Fancy Feast a day, divided in two meals. Drinks spring water (weight was 18+ lbs until some 4-5 years ago, gradually losing weight down to 12-13 lbs about a year ago). About 5-6 days ago had poor appetite, while vomiting stopped. Urinating on rug also stopped. More listless for a couple of days after. Looks thinner than usual. Nose less moist but not completely dry. Felt a bit warm. Today nose is cool and moist. Eating a bit more. Weight was 10.2 lbs 2 days ago, today 9.8 lbs. Is she recovering from a virus? Low on funds, trying to avoid labs

Hello. Thanks for writing in. It doesn't really sound like a viral infection she is having. The increase in urination and drinking does have me concerned. With her age, diabetes, kidney failure, liver disease or hyperthryoidism would be the most likely diagnosis. I would highly suspect hyperthyroidism in this case. I had a case recently with these same signs that ended up being hyperthyroid. Unfortunately, diagnosis is going to be difficult without routine bloodwork and a thyroid panel. The best you can do is watch her for a couple more days, but if her signs don't improve or she stops eating altogether, you will really need to get some routine bloodwork, urinalysis and thryoid panel on her. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.
