Question
I am new to a Mini. I am a bit concerned about temperature. The fact that the fan runs for a few ninutes after turning the car off, was explained to me as a "quirk"of European cars, but I don't understand what triggers it. The first couple of months I had it, it didn't do it at all, but then it started and sometimes it does it, and sometimes it doesn't. I don't think it has to do with engine temperature because sometimes it does it first thing on a cold morning after just driving a few miles. In addition, I noticed that the temperature gauge will jump up to the hot light while I wait at a traffic light. As I go again it will drop to normal. I also think that the time that the fan runs is increasing. Is all this normal?

Your fan will run all the time while ac is on. And depending on the temp of motor it will come on when the temp calls for the fans. Your getting hot is not normal but what is getting hot? Do you have a temp gauge? How high does it get usually the thermastate is set to 190 area, 10 degrees over 200 would be to much. You might want to replac e your thermastate, or if your temp sensor is bad and calling for the fan then replace that. You should be able to idle for as long as you need in the hottest of temps with your fan and thermastate regulating your temp to normal operation tremps. Make sure you have the right amount of coolant also.

Good answer. Unfortunately there is no numerical gauge or a warning light that indicates I am overheating. . All it has is a gauge with lines and a needle. Normally the needle is halfway. What happens is that as soon as I stop for a light, the needle literally jumps to the last line on the hot side, which lights up. Once I resume speed, it slowly goes back to the middle.
