Question

There is a cat at work (hospital). He lives in the woods. I see him eat with the racoons in the garbage dump. I work weekends. I have been feeding him. He will eat up to 4 cat tins. He is very friendly with me. She has learned to trust me. She does not have a tail, a stub. With a small opening. She also has two open wounds on his legs (red!!!). I don't know if the racoons bit him or what? or because he sleeps in rocks and the wounds can't heal. Could he have rabies? How much would a vet visit cost. I really want to help him.

Answer

Hello and thank you for contacting Just Answer.

Thank you so much for opening you heart to a homeless friend.

Because she is a stray it is hard to tell the cause of her injuries.I would suspect if she was fighting with the raccoons she would try to avoid them instead of eating with them.

I would check with your local animal control to see if there has been any positive rabies in your local raccoons. Most states randomly test raccoons thought out the state as raccoons are the one of the main carriers of the disease.

If there have been any positive tests they may ask that you put her in quarantine for a short time and to have her vaccinated.

Veterinary office visits run from $25- $45 depending where you live they will be able to tell you on the phone. I can not tell you what the charge.will be to repair any wounds or medications that may be needed. Here is a link to some agencies that may have available funds to assist you with medical care should you need assistance.

I hope this has been helpful, and please let me know if you get her or not.

She will be a forever faithful friend.

could an open wound be life threatening? is 44f to cold for the cat to be outside?

Accepted Answer

An open wound depending on where it is would cause the most harm if it becomes infected. This can be very dangerous if it is an animal bite that becomes infected.

It may be possible to heal them by washing them with antibacterial soap and antibiotic cream but I can not tell you that for sure since I can not see her.

44 is cold however if she can find shelter she will most likely be ok.
