Question

i have been diagnosed w/ facial cellulitis. i woke up this morning with what looks like first to second degree burns over my entire face, severe edema in the cheeks, very hot to the touch. I didn't know what was wrong. i saw my physician this morning; since i have psoriasis that tends to flare this time of year, i was given a prednisone injection and started on 500 mg erythromyacin. The edema is lessening and the pain is slowly subsiding. My question is: what kind of moisturizer should i apply to my face? Neutrogena extreme moisture? Ponds moisturizer for dry skin? A topical antibiotic? "Use a moisturizer" seems to be the words of choice, but i don't know which one would be best. Any suggestions? Thanks!

In general -- when treating infected skin -- you should not use any antibiotic ointments or moisturizers on the skin itself.

It is important to keep potentially infected skin clean and dry.

You should start to see results from the antibiotics with two to three days.

Until the infection has cleared -- it is usually recommeneded that you keep any extra creams and ointments off of the area, as they may impede the healing process.

i'm glad i asked! My skin is starting to shead; should i just use a wet washcloth and dab at the skin to remove the dead tissue?

Answer

Yes, in general keeping the skin clean and dry is best during these first few days.

And certainly -- you should see improvements within the first two to three days -- if not, having your doctor reexamine you and consider other antibiotics is best.

Will this episode send my psoriasis into overdrive? i'm 53 years old and have fought like crazy to keep the psoriatic lesions off my face and hands. i've given up fighting the elbows, knees, panty line and shins. This is such a new and, for me, very frightening situation.

Answer

Hopefully this is simply an isolated experience (which the psoriasis may have precipitated), but once the infection is treated, it should not have any bearing on the psoriasis.

My G.P. believes the psoriasis set this off. Thank you for your help. It's a shame Halloween is 11 days away.....this face would make a perfect mask! I appreciate the time you took with me. I certainly would have done the wrong thing by using the moisturizer. I thank you very much!
