Question

97 Passat TDI cranks great on warm mornings. On cold mornings, takes twenty seconds or so on the starter to crank, then smpkes bad for a few seconds. About 250,000 miles, no oil consumption, no other running problems. Is this an injector problem?

The previous owner apparently repaced the timing belt and the injector pump about 10,000 miles ago. I have no idea whether the job was done right, however, the engine runs great and has plenty of power. Regarding your comment about checking the "static and dynamic timing of the engine", are you referring to (1) the camshaft (2) the injector pump or (3) a computer setting? AND, if the problem were to be the "static and dynamic timing of the engine", why would a timing problem show up only on cold mornings? Thanks.

Answer

static timing is the initial set up of the belt to the cam and crank and inj pump w/ it locked down

dynamic timing is checked while running w/ scan tool

the reason why i ask is that the timing is different setting when cold and the quantity adjuster is either too much open or too little open causing driveability problems

timing is very critical !!!!

Thank you for your response. Please let me reply to your last communication. I am not experiencing drivability problems (if I understand the meaning of this term), just cranking problems. Yesterday (while it was NOT cold outside) I noticed that it cranked up almost instantly, but there was still a cloud of smoke. Could my cold cranking problem be injectors leaking into the cylinders? When injectors go bad, do they perform worse when the engine is cold? What about fuel leaking back into the fuel tank? Is this a possibility? Please advise regarding the quantity adjuster - Does this part go by a different name? I am not familiar with a quantity adjuster. Thank you for your response.

Accepted Answer

THE Q ADJUSTER IS INTERGRATED W/ THE INJECTOR PUMP!!!

I DO UNDERSTAND THAT U HAVE A STARTING ISSUE ONLY !!!

TIMING MUST BE CHECKED FIRST !!!

WHEN COLD IF TIMING IS OFF ON THE RICH SIDE YES LONG CRANK THEN RUNS SMOKE OUT OF THE TAIL PIPE

THE TIMING OF INJECTION VERY CRITICAL!!!

FUEL LINE AIR LEAK IS POSSIBLE!!!

IF A CAR HAS A STARTING PROBLEM IN MY SHOP THEN TIMING GETS CHECKED FIRST!!!! NO IFS ANDS OR BUTS

I have the tools to set the camshaft and fuel distributor timing. Do I also need electrical tools to change or modify a computer setting?

Thanks
