Question

Calorie Intake - I am on p90X, hiking for 30 minutes and play tennis for 1 hour for 5 days a week. I weigh 200 pounds now after 26 days on this plan - I weighed 215 when I started. But have been at 200 for about 10 days. I worried that my calorie intake is low... I am typically consuming about 1200 calories a day. Virtually no carbs or bad sugars.. nothing too fatty.. Breakfast - Protein Shake ( 150 calories) Lunch - Chicken Salad ( 300 calories) Shake - Shake ( 150 calories) Dinner - Lean Meat, Veggies (500 calories) Snack - Fruit,Random (100-200 calories) I don't have a ton of extra energy between activities but I'm not a walking zombie and still get moving on the tennis court every night. My question is, how many calories should I consume to GET LEAN and continue to loose weight.. I am working out everyday more than I ever have and want to gain muscle of course but my main goal is loose weight!

Answer

Hello,

Welcome to Just Answer and thanks for your question. You are eating too few calories to get all the nutrition you need. Men need at least 1,500 to 1,800 calories per day. You should add these calories as green vegetables and fruits since your shakes are already supplying all the protein you need. The added bulk and fiber from the veggies will keep you feeling fuller and give you more energy between meals. You should aim for a sensible 1-2 pounds of weight lost per week. Fast weight loss usually results in even faster weight regain. To gain muscle, you really need to add some weight training to your exercise program. Aerobic exercise is healthy for your body, but it takes weights to really put on muscle. Even 20 minutes three times a week will help.

Thanks for your answer - but to be clear.. I am working out on a pretty intense training program called P90x (its on TV all the time) by Tony Horton.. its about 1 hour a day of weight lifting with small wieghts, bands and natural exercises.

I know that the standard is " 1500- 2000" for a man but I am overweight but about 25 pounds still..

My question is very specifically will eating low calories REALLY prevent me from LOOSING wieght due to my body holding on to the fat like I have read online?

I will accept your answer after this thread....

Accepted Answer

Eating too few calories puts your body into starvation mode, and can change your metabolism, making it still more difficult to lose weight or maintain weight in the future. Slow and steady is the best way to take the excess weight off. After all, it didn't get there at the rate of 15 pounds per month, and it isn't healthy to try to lose it that way either. That is the case whether you have 25 pounds to lose or 250 pounds. It's still lost at 1-2 pounds per week.
