Question

My do jumped off my husbands lap last night and got his leg caught between my husbands leg and twisted it to land on the floor. He limped for a bit but seemed ok afterwards. Today he is still not putting a lot of pressure on it and it seems to wobble when he walks although being a cocker spaniel his legs are quite bandy and he is only 11 months old so is still quite clumsy. I have also noticed a clicking sound when he walks. He is not in pain and does not whince when we have tried to touch it. Not sure whether I should take him the vets or jus keep an eye on it for a couple of days. Can you advise what it might be causing this? Thanks Lynne

Hello,

Do you have a vet open in your area? If so the dog needs to be seen today. While the leg may not be broken there is a high risk of torn ligaments or a torn ACL. There is also the chance of a dislocation in the hip since there is a click sound, this is more likely. He could also have a fracture in the bone. Fractures seldom cause a great deal of pain, but they can cause the dog to limp or be unable to bear full weight.

If there is no one within reach you can use ice packs (Ice wrapped in towels) to place on the leg to help with swelling. You can give aspirin as long as there are no bleeding conditions present and as long as the dog is not on any naisads from the vet. Also if any corticosteroids in a oral or injectable form have been given you can not give aspirin. The dosage for aspirin is 5mgs per pound of body weight every 12 hours for a maximum of two days. If the dog can not have aspirin you can use the ice compresses only.

Keeping the dog immobile is the biggest issue......the last thing you want is for the dog to further injure the leg. If you have a crate now is the time to use it to keep the dog from moving around until you can see the vet. Otherwise a small area closed off will work as well.
