Question

My son has Schizophrenia for over 10 years. He has been stable for the past three to four years and is on Risperdal Injectable 25 mg every three weeks. 10 days ago he stated working partime 5 days a week. Previous to this he was only working one full day a week. In the last few days I noticed Hallucination. What do you recommend. I do have an appointment today with his doctor, but I do need another opinion. Thanks XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX

Hi there ,

Welcome to Just answer !

Well, there are two things here , which could have lead to the start of hallucinations , first being the act that he has been subjected to sudden increase in work , which has brought with it , increased demand and stress , and these can aggravate and precipitate the symptoms of schizophrenia , which uptil now were kept under control .

Second possible reason for the hallucination can be the fact that he might have developed resisitance against the present dose of risperdal consta , and the dose needs to be revised by his psychiatrist

So, i suggest that you discuss these two possibilities with his doctor , that are , the work related stress which has been sudden with no gradual process of exposing him to increased work duration slowly and the fact that his present dose of risperdal may have become less effective , as this quite often happens in such cases of long term treatment with antipsychotics..

I hope this helps..

I wish you all the best..
