Answer

Hello. The easiest way to change oil in any marine 4-stroke motor is to use an oil pump, which extracts the oil through the dipstick tube. These are available at most marine stores (and online) and come in both manual and electric versions. The most convenient have a battery operated pump and a container to hold the used oil which can then be easily poured into a waste tank or jug. One hint: the oil should be warm (not hot) so it will flow easily up the tube and out.

I know that using an electric pump is the best way to go, I actually do have one of those. The reason I asked the question specifically about the Yamaha 230 Twin HO, is because there isn't enough room in the dipstick cavity to get the oil pump hose down the hole. The problem is that you can suck out about 2 quarts and that is all. What I need to know is how a Yamaha service shop would do it, since there must be a drain tube or other way of draining the crankcase if you can only get the 2 quarts out the dipstick hole.

I don't recal;l that being an issue, but I have a very thin tube on my pump, and it also has fittings so it can screw onto the top of a threaded dipstick or fit tight with a rubber piece that fits around the tube - that way it just pumps right up the tube without having to push anything down.
