Question

I have a 1977 25hp evinrude outboard. I.m having trouble with the needle valve in the float bowl sticking. I tried replacing the needle and after the engine sat for a few days it stuck again. I bought a carbkuretor rebuild kit and had the same problem after not running for a few days. What is the problem?

Answer

Hello,

sounds as if you need a new seat for the needle, if there is any gunk build up in the gas tank or fuel lines it maybe getting into the carb, at the same time if the carb is all gunked up the same thing will happen as well. Also inspect the float for any damage

Thanks,

Joe

As I stated in my problem question, I used a rebuild kit for the carb. It has a new seat, and the carb was totally cleaned with carb cleaner. There is new gas in a new gas tank with new fuel line.

Is the tank a built in or accessory tank?

Is the tank clean and did you install a new fuel filter?

It sounds like you are either getting something in the carb making the needle stick or there is a problem with the carb/metal.

It does not take much at all to get into there and cause the needle to stick, is it getting stuck close or open?

The tank is an accessory tank, and yes it is clean. the fuel filter is new also. the needle sticks in the closed position, not allowing fuel to enter the bowl. I use sta-bil marine formula ethanol treatment in the gas. lkCould that be cauksing a problem?

Answer

The ethanol maybe drying out the rubber seat for the needle, try putting just a little oil in the gas and see if it helps using a premix, or switch to non-ethanol gas.

I use a 50- to- 1 mix for the gas. Using a non-ethanol gas is not an option. I have ran the moter for three yeas with no problems, until this summer. The engine will run great after I put carb back in " I have taken it out and torn it apart three times this summer" but after it sits for a week or more I have the same problem.

Sounds like either getting water droplet in there or the bowl is slowly leaking down on gas and once dry it will stick. Open the bowl after a few days of sitting and see if it still has fuel in it.

I don't think that there isw water droplets in the fuel, I kind of thought that the bowl might be slowely leaking, but it is hard to check without taking the carb off. I have taken the boat out of the water for the winter, so I won't know if that was the problem until next spring.

Accepted Answer

Well that is a while to wait, just make sure everything is assembled correctly and then I would inspect for leaks, if the fuel leaks out the needle will open because as the fuel enters the bowl the float raises which causes the needle to close and when the gas goes out of the bowl the float lowers, now normally then a leak would cause the needle to open and not stick, however the float maybe getting caught on something and keeping the needle most of the way closed except for a tiny leak then when dry it can sometimes stick to the seat.

Thanks,

Joe
