Question

My dog is a 6-years' old beagle. I found him to be a bit depressed in these 2 two days, then the worst thing happened last night. He screamed (yes, scream!) when he was asleep at about 5:00am. I suspected that he was having a nightmare and woke him up immediately. Then he started trembling and was reluctent to go to sleep. I have checked that he do not have any injury or pain. In the morning, he was still trembling a bit and in a daze. In the evening on the same day, he still trembled a little but totally lost interest in everything. Thank god, he still has good appetite. However, at mid night, he started that horrible screaming again and trembling seriously. I am very worry about this and planned to go to the vet. Please give me some advice on his condition.

OK, thanks for your reply. When he gets into position to have a bowel movement or urinate, does he seem uncomfortable, or have a funny posture compared to normal?

No adnormal posture. But as you have concern on his condition on urination, please also note that over one month ago, we have brought him to the vet on dripping of urine problem as well as the dropping of his tail. The Vet has precribed some antibiotic to him and said that the test on his urine shows no sign of infection. He tail problem has been recovered and the dripping is much relieved.

Answer

OK, thank you for the reply. The vague symptoms you are describing, are often the result of pain or discomfort somewhere in the body. With the recent history of dripping urine, I am suspicious that there may be inflammation in the prostate gland, and I think that the prostate should undergo an ultrasound examination, in order to determine its condition. Aside from that, the most common explanation for vague pain of this sort, is spinal pain - which can be mild to severe, but can prevent dogs from sleeping well and just cause them to act "not quite right" - if x-rays don't show any abnormalities, then a course of Muscle Relaxants might be a reasonable course of action, along with some pain medicine for a few days, to see if the problem is reduced at all.

Vague problems can be tricky to identify - because our pets just can't talk to us to tell us what the problem is. If the prostate and back do not appear to be a source of a problem, then some blood tests may help narrow down any inflammation in any of the organ systems.

Thanks for your prompt reply. One more question, is this an emergency case, do I need to bring him to the vet immediate or can I wait till tomorrow.

Accepted Answer

If he's eating and drinking well, and his gums are pink (not pale), then it doesn't sound like an emergency from what you have described to me.
