Question

My three year old indoor cat has coughing or hiccup episodes. She has had her shots. She does NOT vomit. She appears to eat well and drink water daily. Could it be hairballs or something more serious.

Hi there,

Thank you for your post!!!

Unfortunately - without examination - I am not going to be able to make a "positive diagnosis" - but I will do my best to help narrow the field and let you know what some possible causes may be...

My information below is from experience, seeing cases similar to what you describe above.

Certainly, I have seen coughing as a result of hairballs, and if not already tried, you can try to use a product such as Laxatone to see if this will decrease these episodes...

In very rare cases I have seen foreign objects, such as string in the throat cause choking...

But if the laxatone does not work - aside from hairballs, the most common reasons that cat's cough include:

1) Feline Asthma is high on my list of possible causes for a cat coughing.

2) Heart disease - cats with an heart abnormalities can also present with a history of coughing.

3) Feline Upper Respiratory Infection - Cats can also cough with a URI.

If the laxatone does not work - the next step would be for your veterinarian to take an x-ray to help differentiate between the causes above.

I hope this information and links above help. Please let me know if you have additional questions.
