Question

My 986 Boxster S has been parked in my driveway, outside for a couple of weeks, and was not run at all. I started it up yesterday and all was fine except the dash display is out. After I drove it a bit and parked/restarted several times two warning lights came on: Charging System and Oil Light. Oil level is fine. All other electrical functions seem OK, turn signals, wipers, lights, etc. The radio comes on but shows "Protect" or something like that. I went out and started it this morning and all is the same except no Oil or Charging lights. My guesses: I live in Vermont and the temperature has gone down to 20F the last few nights. At the time I started it it was up to 45 or 50. I noticed some condensation in a few places, metal, inside the car, around the ignition key slot for instance. At first I figured some relay was stuck, (does it even have any mechanical relays?), but then got to thinking that maybe some condensed moisture got to an electronic something or other.

Hello XXXXXXX,

Did you have to jump start the car? The symptoms you are describing usually appear after a battery has gone dead. It is possible to send a voltage spike through the system when jump starting.

The oil light is possibly connected to the temperature. If you are close to the oil change interval and the temperature is in the 40-50 range the oil is going to be rather thick and resistant to flow. This should have gone away once warmed up.

The charge light being on may indicate a problem with the alternator or the wiring. This is something that needs to be looked at. Any shop should be able to do a chargnig system test for you but make sure that they have some experience with Porsche.

The only thing that a shop will be able to diagnose with a Snap-on scanner on a Porsche is the Engine OBD2 trouble codes. All other systems are locked out. I would recommend checking if there is a Porsche specialty shop that is closer than the dealer. They can usually do dealer level work.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with

Thanks,

Todd

I am not sure if you had moisture that could have condensed where it does not belong. Most electrical components are sealed so if you did have moisture causing a problem you would have to have a bad part for the condensation to cause a problem.

Hey Todd, I didn't have to jump it, it fired right up. And the oil change interval is OK plus it's Mobil 1 so wouldn't expect viscosity issue. Am thinking that Oil and Charging systems are not getting some sensor signal, due to this bad board or whatever. Porsche experts are few and far between up here so I guess I'll call the dealer and make an appointment and/or see if I can't speak to the main Porsche specialist on the phone. Thanks for your help.
