What is your question?

Dear Rick:
I have a Dutch Colonial house and it has a storm roof shingles covering. The previous owner took off wood shingles on part of the roof and the remaining area he put on top of three layers of roofing. It will not take a further roof and I see that underlayer has rotten wood and needs to be replaced with new plywood and facia board.

I need to know the steps after stripping the multi roof ,such as tar paper covering(single or double layer) and weather stripping requirements to make sure that I can achieve at least a thirty year life with a new complete roof installation. This is for my own information, so that when I get a contractor to install I know what they should do to achieve my goal. There also has been squirrel invasion at the gutter area and I am afraid that I may end up with a leak into the house. I covered the area but I know that is only a stop and could leed to further invasions.

Thanks.

Conor

Hi Conor

These specs would be for a roof in a cold climate. 15# felt as an underlayment is good practice but not required. You should have a miniumum of 6' of ice and water barrier starting at the drip edge and extending up the roof as well as at least 3' in any valleys. Typically a 7" drip edge is installed then the ice & water laid over the drip edge flange. Any defective roof sheathing should be replaced either with similar material or the entire sheathing surface can be covered with ply wood if the condtion of the sheathing is generally inferior. A 3" drip edge is also typically installed along the rake edge. Any rotted fascia should be replaced. If there are also gutters I would recommend using Azek or similar expanded PVC trim boards (for the fascia) which will not rot. Any dormers should be step flashed where their siding intersects the roofing. Dormer siding should be held a minimum of 1/2" above the top of the roofing. Finally if you want a 30 years roof get 30 year shingles.

Dear Rick:

Thanks for your prompt reply. I am here in New York City and I will follow you advise and get a cold climate as outlined. I thought that I would need that but did not know the specifications.

Have a great day and of course "Go Yankees"
