Question

I am the owner of a beautiful 5 year old brown labrador called Ruby. She has severe skin allergies and has already had one ear canal & middle ear removed due to a continuing chronic infection, 3 yrs ago. The other is deteriorating & the ear canal is thinning due to scar tissue. She has been pretty much regularly on & off antibiotics, anti fungals & steroids of varying strengths in the past 18 months. As well as a continuing course of the drug 'Atopica'. Her constant flapping and production of sticky brown wax is leading our vet to conclude that the second ear will need removing at some point. I feel very stressed as to how she will adapt to becoming deaf even though currently she only has one ear, which i presume is getting slowly deafer. Apart from her ear problem she is in great shape and is happy with no other ailments. My concern is that this is too much stress for a dog to endure, suddenly losing her hearing or am i 'humanising' her too much? Maybe dogs do adapt? Help! Thank u

Answer

Hi pixiestudio,

Since your question is about how the dog will respond to the loss of hearing I think I can help you in finding the answer as my dog lost not only hearing, but had one eye taken out and was blind in the other. While I was a nervous wreck at the time of the eye operation , he came home acting fine and like nothing had happened.

His sense of smell was heightened as he could smell a biscuit a mile away! Really, we do put too many of our emotions onto our pets. My dog still played as normal, and still got grumpy as normal.

You will have to make adjustments , like leash walking or staying with him as he goes out for potty so you know where he is as he is not going to be able to hear you calling.

Put a reflective collar on him so he is easy to find at night. Stomp your foot on the floor to get his attention inside as he will feel vibrations if he is not directly looking at you. My dog I found, knew my routine better then I as in the morning he would know I was in the room (if he was sleeping) by the smell of my coffee.

So don't put yourself through a lot of torment. I have helped train many deaf dogs and although they are not allowed any more to become Therapy dogs , they are the dogs that really excel at training because they always watch the owner.

Thank you for your reply and it was good to hear of your dogs adaption and personal experience with this matter. To me, the alternative seems to barbaric an option when physically she is great in every other way. I hope she will actually, once adjusted, feel better with the fact that she doesn't have to take drugs every day. I also have to be mindful that my decision reflects her best interests and not mine. In her life she has already had a couple of ear procedures that have resulted in her having a full anaesthetic. At the age of 5 do you think her heart will be strong to endure another? Naturally the vet has tested and its fine so far. I just want to make sure if I choose to put her thru this traumatic operation that I am trying to give hera better life, after recovery. And not to put her this just for my own selfish reasons. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Accepted Answer

I can understand your concern and while any surgery is risky if it is going to prevent the pain the dog feels from the ear, and who knows how they feel when constantly medicated, then you are making the right decision. Vets don't suggest operations on a whim so this must have been a problem for a while. I can tell you that my dog was near the age of 10 when the eye was removed and he did not change at all once it was over he lived his normal life cycle or better of 17 years. This is strictly a personal decision that only you can make.
