Question

1992 Mazda Miata. The car quit running while driving. Thought the fuel pump was bad because the Injector (Fuel Pump Relay) would click and pump would not operate when the key was turned on. Replaced pump. Pump still wouldn't run. Checked Black/Red wire going to pump, OK. Removed relay checked for power. Had power on one of the four termainal. Ran wire from hot to pump, pump ran. All this time I have a charger on the battery. Checked car closer, found timing belt broke. Replaced belt. Tried to start. Didn't start. No spark on plugs. When I first picked the car up and tried to start it, I had a 'Check Engine' light. Now it does not came on at all, not even when just the key is turned on. Did I blow the PCM some how? So, I have a car that seems to have good compression, I haven't checked that yet. No check engine light at all and no spark. And fuel pump doesn't run when the key is just turned on.

Info Request

Hi, I am looking at it this way, the engine actually died because the timing belt broke.

The fuel and ignition will stop if the belt is not there to turn.

Check the keyway on the crank pully. It is very weak, the timing marks will line up but the engine will not be "in" time.

Check engine lite.....check the fuse first.

Hope this helps some.

I couldn't find a fuse for the PCM. You wouldn't happen to know where this fuse is or what Mazda is calling it....would ya? :) All the fuses under the hood look good. I checked the key way when I replaced the timing belt. Looked good. You are right....I missed the timing belt problem and went to the pump first. The timing marks looked right. It seems to be a easy car to put in time and there is a good bit or room in the front to work. I'm fairly sure I screwed up the 'Check Engine' light some how, cause it was coming on before I started working on the car.

Looks like the ECU is the room fuse. Your correct, the engine will not start if the check engine lite does not come on.

I'll check this fuse. I was hoping that thePCM woud be protected by something. These fuses are hard to see. Thanks for the location. I'll pull it when I get home.

I was also wondering. Is this engine made so that when the timing belt breaks, the pistons don't hit the valves? I looked at the valves fairly closely and thought they going up and down fine. That doesn't really mean a couple aren't bent or there is a hole in one of the pistons. Is this a problem with this 1600 cc?

The 1600 and the 1800 are NOT interference engines. Some of the larger dispacement are sucj as the 2000, 2200 and the 3000.

Checked the Room Fuse, it was OK. So, I checked all the fuses under the dash. The Cooling Fan Fuse was blown. Changed it, check engine light came on and car started on the first crank. Thanks for the help.
