I received a letter from NY State claiming that I owe back taxes. The taxable amount they calculated based on my federal return agi is much higher than my what my federal taxes were for that year and are incorrect. In addition they are asking for interest and penalties, what can I do?

I've contacted the state disputing their claim. I was just recently able to obtain copies of my tax returns for that tax year but I don not have all of the supporting documentation.

Info Request

Hello,

Thanks for your question. Do you have a copy of your New York state income tax return or did you never file one? Do you just have the federal return copy?

Hi,

That's good. You say you already disputed their letter of balance due? Did you write a letter or call them or go to their office in person? You need to find out why they are charging you tax on more than the taxable income you reported on your State Income Tax return. Was there an additional tax assessment? If so, you need to ask them why. Did you go through an audit? It could also be just a processing error, so you need to gather all the information from them on why you are being billed for more tax than you reported for that tax year. Send them a copy of your tax return if necessary and attach a copy of your return to your inquiry letter. Here is their phone number:
