Question

I have a 1 1/2 yo English Mastiff, and she has been abnormally tired since I got home from work today. When I arrived home, I found two piles of vomet on the floor and pee on my bed. I have two other Mastiffs, so I assumed that it was my 8 yo, since she sometimes has accidents because she's in her geriatric stage, Now, I'm wondering if it wasn't the 1yo since she seems sick? She has food allergies, which give her diarreah sometimes (if food doesn't agree with her). I put Frontline Flea med on her a few days ago. This is the first time that I've used this product on her. I was affraid due to her allergies and sensitivies. Could she be suffering from a toxic reaction days later? She's so tired -- I've never seen her this tired. She's just not herself. I checked her gums and they're pink. Any suggestions?

Info Request

Hi XXXXXXXXX~

Has she vomited at all since you got home?

Any diarrhea that you've noticed?

Did she eat normally?

Will she get up and go outside and such?

Reply

She hasn't vomited since I got home.

No Diarreah that I've noticed.

She ate normally today.

She will get up and go outside, but hesitently (which is abnormal for her).

She seems very sad and sort of flinches is I go to touch her. It seems like she's achey. She pulls away when I try to pet, hug, or touch her. She is literally falling asleep with her head up as I'm talking to her.

Could she have a virus similar to what we would get?

Do you have deer in your area?

Does she have tick exposure?

We have a fenced in yard and my housing plan is between two major highways (and steep hills), so we never see deer in our yard. I've only ever found a tick on one of my dogs, while living here, in 8 years. I will check her over now to be safe.

Accepted Answer

Hi again~

Normally if a dog is going to have a reaction to Frontline, we expect to see it within a day or two, so I'm skeptical to think that is what is causing her to feel so sickly.

Because she's only been ill for one day, and is acting non-emergent (not vomiting or having diarrhea, will still eat, ect) I don't think I'd rush her to the emergency clinic tonight..however, if she's still feeling sick tomorrow you might want to have your vet take a peek at her..just to be on the safe side.

If there's even a remote possibility that she may have gotten bit by a tick at some point in her last year and a half, you might want to ask them to run a 4DX test, which checks for tick-borne diseases such as Lyme and Anaplasma..both of which can present with these lethargic, achy symptoms.

I hope this helps.
