Question

I have a painful lump in my armpit that has sort of come and gone. It used to not hurt much, but this a.m. in the shower I felt it again and pushed around on it, and not only did the lump hurt, but so did my armpit. The pain went away after a while, but any time I touch it, it begins to hurt again. I wouldn't worry, except that my sister had breast cancer and I understand that the breast tissue extends into the armpit. I'm male now, but have had a sex change. I had a double mastectomy about six years ago, but I don't know if that makes a difference. Should I get it checked out? I haven't been sick; I don't think I've any infections, except my allergies are out of control. I think that's what has caused my gum pain -- the sinus drainage.

No fever. I've had the lump for a while, but I'm not sure how long. It doesn't seem to have grown, but to tell the truth, I really haven't paid much attention. As I said, I felt it this morning, but it was only after I pressed on it that it began to hurt. It's done that in the past, but I always figured it was an ingrown hair or something. I checked in the mirror today, but I couldn't see the telltale red bump of a hair. It only hurts for a little while, probably about 30 minutes, after I feel around on it. I read that if it's hard and doesn't move around, it might be cause for concern, but since I've never had a lump, I'm not sure how "hard" it is, and it stays in the same place. I also don't know if it's irregularly shaped -- it's just there and gets sore when I mess with it. My armpit hurts for a while, and then I forget about it, so I guess the pain goes away.

Hello,

This can be an inflamed lymph node, caused by an infection aroung the armpit / breast area.

You need to have this examined by a doctor and also probably have a Needle Biopsy to confirm an infection, as this has lasted a long time and needs to be treated appropriately.

Kind Regards,

Dr.Joshi
