Question

Hi, I have become a stepmom to a rat. He has been with us since the first of the year. He has always had "lumps" under his skin that seem to go away after a few weeks. But recently he has developed a large "mass" under his neck, one of his eyes is red (like he is scratching it raw). In the past week he has really gone down hill. He has lost some of the use of his back legs and has been chewing and licking his butt. My budget is VERY tight but I really don't like watching him suffer either. any ideas?

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear that your rat isn't doing well. A three-year-old rat is the equivalent of a human well into their 80's. Average lifespan is 2 to 3 years, witha very few rats living to four years.

As rats get older, they become more prone to some diseases that can't be treated. The symptoms you're seeing are common with these illnesses. Some of their organs can become embedded with minerals. They can develop cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Cancer and strokes become quite common. You can read more about old age in small rodents here:

I'm afraid that your rat most likely has one or more of these illnesses of old age. If after reading about the diseases of old age, you decide that's what's wrong, all you can do is keep him comfortable. You can make sure he has a soft bed, and use a syringe to put a few drops of water in the side of his mouth every hour or so. Even at age three, there's a slight possibility that it may be something treatable. What I recommend is that you make an appointment to see a vet. After an exam, the vet can determine if your rat can be treated. If so, the proper treatment can begin. If not, it may be best to have the vet humanely end your rat's suffering. These links will take you to directories of vets who treat small rodents:

If your budget won't allow a vet visit, you should contact your local animal shelter. Many of them offer euthanasia at no or little charge as a public service.

I'm sorry not to have better news for you. It's always painful to watch a beloved pet grow old and frail. The biggest drawback to these small pets is that they have such a short lifespan.
