Question

Our 11 year old beagle is having some difficulties. She is 4 months s/p insulinoma surgery, full removal of tumor, benign. We took her to the ER vet 10/17 due to pain in her back. She has previously been diagnosed with intervertebral disk disease. We have been giving her tramadol (50 mg q8h) and methocarbamol (125mg q8h), but tonight it has not relieved her pain very well. She was walking around the house for approx. 2+ hours tonight...she would not sit or lie down. She is now resting on her belly, but the respirations are shallow and rapid. She we take her back to ER vet tonight? She has an appt with her vet Wed 10/21

Hello,

If she is exhibiting pain with the Tramadol and Methocarbamol, she may need an injectable medication that will not bother her stomach, but offer her further pain relief. The fact she is not wanting to sit or lay down, the shallow and rapid respirations are all a definately a serious sign of discomfort. This may not even be related to the IVDD, but something else, since dogs are usually hesitant to walk or move with IVDD. I would definately have her back to the ER since Wednesday can seem like an eternity when your baby is in pain. There are other medications that may be longer acting that can give her some help to rest. It is important if this is IVDD, that she gets strict cage rest and the moving around and being unsettled is not a good situation. I suggest seeing the ER vet for a follow up and possibly a pain shot to help your baby. Joan
