Question

My cat has been sneezing for the past three days. It is EXTREMELY traumatic to take him to a vet, and I'd like to avoid going if it's reasonable to assume it's just something stuck in his nose that will work it's way out. I'm concerned b/c the sneezing has been consistent for the past few days. Any advice for me? He exhibits no other symptoms, is eating normally, drinking, playful, active etc. Thanks in advance!

Jack is 5, no nasal discharge.

Thanks for the reply. If Jack has no other symptoms other than some sneezing, then it may be reasonable to see how things go for a few more days, if a veterinary visit is very traumatic for him. We sometimes have good results with Chlorpheniramine, an over the counter antihistamine. It is usually given at 2 to 4 mg, twice a day, and it may help relieve some irritation in the nasal passages.

If at any time his appetite decreases, or he has nasal discharge, especially if it's yellow or green or white, then he should be seen by your veterinarian.

Can you tell me where I would get Chlorpheniramine, is it OTC in the US as well? I'm looking online and not seeing it. Thanks again for your help.

The vet is traumatic b/c Jack had a broken rear leg at 18months, and had 2 surgeries with external fixatures to fix it. We had to keep him away from our other cat Ollie, while he healed. If we take him to a vet, he comes home traumatized and ends up fighting with Ollie. We spoke to a cat psychologist once that described it as transference. I'm hopeful I can get some Chlorpheniramine OTC here in NY and that he will be feeling better soon. Thanks again for your quick reply. I am going to recommend this website to everyone I know!

Chlorpheniramine is generic Chlor-Trimeton. It should be widely available at any drug store or pharmacy. I'm based in the US, and any CVS or Walgreens or other pharmacy should have it in stock with Benadryl and other cold/allergy remedies.
