Question

I get two yanmar 3JH43 40 horse power on my catamaran. Two weeks ago the guy which is taking care of the boat had the bad idea to run the engine without open the intake cooling seawater. He was running the engine during around 20 minutes and ten he stopped it. The result is the two flexible impeller was destroyed. Yestarday I changed the impellers and the engine was running good, the only problem was on the starboard engine which was not posible to stop using just the stop button swicth. I had to push the stop button swicth and in the same time turn the key switch off. Some minutes later I turn on again the engine and I notice that from the cables conected to the solenoid above the starting motor some smoke was came out and it was smelling of burnt. In the same time there were a noise like a big fun turning so I again I switch of the engine with the same system I did before and I notice that the starter motor and the solenoid were very hot. What do you think could be the problem?

Accepted Answer

The engine got reeeal hot! the engine remote control harness of wires melted enough to connect the stop switch wire to ground and the start soleniod wire to a hot positive, hence, starter turns constant and gets hot.and engine will not turn off.Look at all the wires on the engine .Look for bare wires and melted insulation.

Do you think the engine because of the heat suffered some others domages? How can I know if there are some others domages?

Accepted Answer

You have a YANMAR. That engine is capable of handling a tremendous amount of heat.Diesel engines have heavier parts to dissapate the heat that is produced by much higher compressions than conventional gas engines but, the electrical wires and sensors and switches could fail.Check all the wiring and things wires are connected to to be sure. Then check the hoses they can melt also.

I'm afraid that the cylinder head gasket suffered. How can I know if this is the case? If there is no air in the cooling water, and not cooling water mixed with the oil is that enought to say that there is no damage at all. Could the piston ring has been damage by the over heat and how could I know? Do I have to expect the engine starts burning some oil?

Accepted Answer

Do a compression test on the engine. Do a pressure test on the cooling tank. Run the engine and see.
