Question

i received a call on my cell phone from a telemaketer in which they stated that i was being entered into a sweepstake for 25.000 and a reduction and magazines i didn't want to join but they pressured me into it. i later got a letter saying that i was to pay in 24.99 or to canceled had to pay the whole price 874.00 that i was not allow to canceled since i was in a legal biding agreement since they had a recording of it. when asked to hear the recording they told me no but that they would settle for 352.00 i told them i couldn't afford this so they we settle on 170.00 but i've been online looking for the company and all i found were complaints on how they scam people into settlements and an ex-employee letting us know how they intimadate us into the settlements by saying that if we don't pay they can report us to the credit report company now i just want to know if this is legal and if there's anything i can do.

Accepted Answer

Yes, legally you can refuse to pay and they cannot force you to submit payment, or report the matter on your credit as a valid debt unpaid.
