Question

Have a JD 445 riding lawmower that is running slower and running rough. Plugs seem to be okay. I was told by friend to test by removing one pug, replacing and emoving the other. One, the left as you sit on the mower, continued to run; right removed, sputtered and backfired. I also have been having some smoking when I first stat it up and it uses some oil.

checked plugs (cleaned off) and checked running as I removed plug wires (see above)

You stated that the plugs are OK. Pull the plug wires off and check for spark on each plug one at at time. The problem sounds like one cylinder is not firing due to a bad ignition module.

I got sparks from each plug wire, the second causing a backfire. Could you tell me if changing the ignition module is difficult or costly?

If you have spark on both cylinders then the ignition module is not the problem. Take the spark plugs out. Crank the engine over with your finger over the spark plug holes and confirm that you feel pressure on both cylinders. Let me know.
