Question

I have a small Carrier natural gas furnace, model #58GC050-1a, series 120. The red knob which turns the pilot and furnace on/off is extremely hard to turn. Admittedly I have not touched it for 10 years, but, given the mild climate I live in (93041), I can save a good deal by turning off the pilot for half the year. What can I do to loosen up this on/off knob? Rick (XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX)

Optional Information

Make : CARRIER NAT. GAS FURN.
Model : 58GC0G0-1A, SERIES 120

Already Tried:
I have loosened up the screw underneath the knob. No help. Gas Co. agent who came to turn on and service man both said it turns hard, but didn't seem concerned as I can turn on/off gas easily using the on/off switch on gas line.

Answer

Has long as it turns I would not be to concerned, but would execize it more often the you have in the past this way it might stay free

THIS KNOB IS NOW "FROZEN" IN THE "ALMOST FULLY ON" POSITION. I CAN LIGHT THE PILOT AND THE FURNACE RUNS FINE. HOWEVER, I STILL DON'T KNOW HOW TO LOOSEN UP THIS KNOB. IS THE PROBLEM LUBRICATION? IF SO, HOW CAN I DO IT? I WANT TO CONTINUE TURNING OFF THE PILOT IN THE WARM MONTHS. CAN I DO SO SAFELY WITH THE KNOB IN THIS POSITION? I CAN, OF COURSE, TURN THE GAS LINE ON AND OFF.

Answer

Well if you use it more often it will loosen up or stay the way it is but if left alone it may freeze in that position so I would turn it maybe once a month for a while that way it get exercized
