Question

I have 14 year old female cat who had a lump on her lower jaw (left mandibular)and diagnosed a month ago as a tumor however not the type of tumor. We felt as did the vet that a biopsy, surgery or other would not help and just put her through unecessary pain and stress. The tumor is now 4X7 centimeters and has remained this size for about a week or more. I was treating this hollistically with c-cap containing among other things cats claw herb and mistle toe to hopefully help shrink the tumor or keep it from spreading. The last week she had gotten constipated and wasn't eating or drinking much. She had an enema and we gave iv fluid to help rehydrate and today she drank a good amount and ate some. I feel she is in some pain or discomfort and was wondering if there is natural herb you can recommend for pain and inflamation besides what we have used? We did stop givin the last 2 days. Narcotics not desired however mild otc that won't cause complications would be good? Thanks!

Answer

Hello, XXXXXXXX

I am very sorry to hear of your cat's troubles.

There is an all natural medication for cats and dogs called Yucca Intensive. It is made from extracts of the Yucca plant and offers many uses in animals for pain relief, digestive health, and skin and coat improvements. You can find it here:

http://www.1800petmeds.com/Yucca+Intensive-prod10850.html

This is the only safe all natural product I know that could provide some relief. Never give human pain relievers to your cat. I am sure you know that, but I always like to make sure the people I help do know that. All human pain relievers are toxic to cats and very hard on their kidneys and should only be administered by the close supervision of a vet.

I do hope things improve for your kitty.

God Bless,

Micki

Hmmm.. thanks you for your answer and kind thought. Question? Can I obtain this locally perhaps at GNC or Whole foods and use it assuming it has the same ingredients? I would like to get a.s.a.p. without having to wait several days. Can I use yucca if the extract contains alcohal? Thanks again.

You may be able to find it at a health store or a drug store with a really good vitamin and supplement section. I know GNC does not carry it.

No do not ever give any medications or supplements that contain alcohol to cats. They can not metabolize it which makes it very toxic to them.

Oh boy... I'm sorry to bother you again and thank again ahead of time! I will no doubt accept! I did in fact give a suplement prior to the c-caps mentioned which contained alcohal about 2-3 weeks ago in small dose for 2 weeks. Took to vet the other night and other than the enema they gave for the constipation and the fluids we gave her heart and vitals seemed o.k. Is there a way to tell if this has or is affecting her or in her system and anything we can do to help? Will the iv fluids help this and should we continue to give? I'm thinking maybe the alcohal may have been what contributed to dehydration? It wasn't severe thankfully and the fluids seem to be helping. She's not eating like we would like to see. She likes area of chin rubbed. Is she in pain?

Accepted Answer

If it was 2-3 weeks ago it is not in her symptom any longer, and yes it could have contributed to some of her dehydration problems. But don't give her any more of it.

The amounts were small so no damage done. It doesn't sound like she exhibited any toxic effects or would have known.

Is she in pain? That is one of the hardest things to determine in a cat as they are masters at hiding pain. The best measure of a cat's health is her appetite and eating habits.

If she likes her chin rubbed then I would no she isn't in pain.

If eating is an issue and dehydration, try feeding her baby food. Use any flavor she would like such as chicken or turkey. Make sure there is onion or garlic powder in. This will be easy to eat and it's easy on the stomach too.

Supplement her with pedialyte too. This will hydrate her and restore electrolytes as well much better than water. You can use a dropper to give her 1 cc every couple hours, or mix it in the baby food.

Oh and don't be sorry :) you are not bothering me at all. It is my job to try my best to answer all your questions you have about your kitty.
