Question

I have a beagle that is 10 years old. She is shivering but I am sure she is not cold. She seems to have trouble moving. Yesterday she was fine, it all seem to start this morning. Any ideas?

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear your dog is not feeling well.

Shivering can be a symptom of fever, so if you can take your dog's temperature with a regular rectal or digital thermometer, this might help you gain more information. Normal temp for dogs is between 100.5 and 102.5. If she has 103 or more, she needs to be seen by a vet, as soon as possible, for evaluation and treatment. For the moment, if she does have fever, you can try to lower it mechanically by wiping her down with a cool, damp cloth (don't let her get a chill while damp) and placing ice packs wrapped in a towel against her belly and under her arms for a few minutes on/a few off. Also, ecourage her to drink fresh water.

If she has no fever, the cause of her shivering must still be diagnosed and treated by a vet, so considering her 'senior' age, it would be a good idea to have her seen today, and if your regular vet does not have weekend hours, bring her to the nearest ER vet center for assessment.

I hope all will be well with your dog.
