Question

i have a 1997 evinrude 115 fast strike. it is a little hard to cold start but once it starts all is well. As soon as you apply throttle after warming up it will pane out my boat but has an entermitent miss which is mostly seen at full throtle. After about 20 minutes of running all problems stop. For the rest of the day on the water the problem will not return. I can go fishing 5 days in a row and the same problem will happen in the same order each day out. It seems to be backwards of most electrical problems as they tend to show up when a moter gets warm. I have pumped the fuel bulb to see if it might be a weak pump and this did not fix the problem. I would be grateful for any help. R. Morrell Lake Charles La.

Answer

OK. That is a carbureted 115 HP Johnson. When you squeeze the fuel bulb does it get firm and stay that way? What is your cold starting process? I still think it could be electrical. It is common for the packs to also fail when cold and work when they are warm.

I pump my fuel bulb first which gets hard then turn thr key and let it go thru the check system then after lights and buzzers go off i push in on the key to choke and turn. It usally takes three ttries before it will start. cold natured. The crazy thing is as I said after the first run and warm up,I can fish the rest of the day even to the point of the motor getting cold and it starts great and runs great till the next time I launch it.

Accepted Answer

OK, after turning the key to the on position, hold it in for a count of 10 when it is cold and it should then fire right up. Does the bulb stay hard after pumping it up or not? IF not you have a leak somewhere. I just did one just like that and the vapor seperator was leaking out of the top. Caused by Ethanol in the fuel.
