Question

I asked a question regarding pneumonia complicated by hernia for my mother and forgot to mention that she is being hydrated by a IV solution of sodium chloride.As a result of her pneumonia, she can not be put under anesthesia and can not get feeding tube. How do you get nutrition to my mother in her present condition.

feeding tube not applicable right because of complications from pneumonia. Can not exploratory measures with anethesia because breathing not strong enough as a result of pneumonia

Hi,

If your mother is not able to eat, and a feeding tube cannot be placed, nutrition can be provided through her IV. The procedure is known as TPN- Total Parenteral Nutrition, where
the person receives nutritional formulas containing glucose, vitamins, amino acids and electrolytes.

This is usually reserved as a last resort- the nutritional formula needs to be carefully calculated based on the person's kidney and liver functions. It may be an option in your mother's case.
