Question

Hello! I have two small dogs, a cockapoo 11yrs old and a toy poodle 7yrs, they are 99% indoor dogs. When they do go out, they manage to pick up ticks, and the lastest was fleas somehow. I gave them flea/tick baths and they were fine for a short time, then they started biting alot, first the poodle was pulling her hair out at butt and tail area, then the cockapoo started, the poodle eased up some and hair came back, but the cockapoo has been ripping her hair out and the skin has black spots and some scabs from biting, and the skin is all red. It looks like mange. Is there a shampoo that will treat any mites or other parasites on them, and if I bomb the house to remove fleas, will the same chemicals in bombs, kill any mites/parasites that are giving them this problem. Thank You, Ian - Massachusetts

Answer

Hello, Ian. Thanks for writing in. You need to get them on a good flea and tick prevention from your vet. You need to apply it every 2-3 weeks for 3 months, then monthly. It can take 3 months to get fleas under control. The ticks need to be removed. Usually tick preventatives won't cause the ticks to fall off. It is better at preventing them from attaching. The house and the yard needs to be treated for fleas and ticks. I recommend an exterminator because they have better products than what you can buy. I have used a yard spray and flea/tick bomb from Home Depot, and they worked pretty well for me for ticks. I did have to treat a couple times, though. Do not use any flea and tick shampoos on them. It will wash off your flea and tick preventative. Use the oatmeal or hypoallergenic shampoo only. No detergent based shampoos. Get a good flea and tick preventative, like Advantix, Frontline or Vectra. Do not get a cheap one from your local grocery store, Walmart, Petsmart or Target. You may want to get some Capstar from your vet. It will kill the fleas in 30 minutes, but it only lasts for 1-2 days. They do not work very well. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.

I did get a flea/tick control from Petsmart - called bio spot? And their problems started shortly after applying the product to them. The active ingredients in it are: Permethrin (CAS #52645-53-1) 45%, (S) Methoprene (CAS #65733-16-6) 3%, Other ingredients 52% which is does not say what they are. These dogs have sensitive skin, so I try not to use any chemicals on them. Could they be allergic to this product. Never have they had anything like this, and I have had each, since they were 10wk old pups. I ask these Q's thru this site, because I am on disability and fixed income. They were at their Vet every six months until a few years ago until my income was limited. I need to try and help them or cure this problem myself if possible. Thank You, Ian

The skin signs you are seeing are most likely due to the fleas, not the preventative. Biospot really isn't a good flea preventative. It will control about 60-70% of the fleas. I would get a better preventative from your vet. You usually don't need to bring them in to buy the preventative. Frontline is actually sold outside of veterinary offices now, so you can get it from Walmart, Target, Petsmart, etc. It is more expensive, but it will work a lot better for you in the long run. Use is every 2-3 weeks at first though. It will take you about 2-3 months to get the fleas and ticks under control. Remember, no flea and tick shampoo. Hope this helps.
