Question

We got a two year old female Scottish Fold from a sheltter about 4 months ago. She was perfectly healthy. And just last month she started to make a weezing noises when she breathes. We have two other cats, that are perfectly healthy. My Scottish Fold has no running nose or discharge from the eyes. She is eating fine and still plays, but the weezing worries me. We did bring her to the vet, and after $400 and an x-ray, they gave us anitbotoics for a possible infection. But after three days on the meds., she stopped eating and was throwing up. The vet told us to stop the meds. and just to watch her. The vet said she could just have the herpes virus and it would work its way through her and she should clear up in two weeks. Well it's been three weeks and she still is weezing, but she is back to eating and playing and being her cute self. I really can't afford another pricey trip to the vet, but I want her to be healthy. Could this just be the virus or possible be allegeric (spelling) to something. I'm open to any suggestions.

Optional Information

Pet's Sex: Female
Pet's Age: 2

Already Tried:
Brought her to the vet, had an xray done, no signs of an infection in the lungs. Started to bring her into the bathrooms when i take a shower to see if the steam from the shower will help clear her nose, doesn't seem to help much. It sounds like her nose is always clogged...like what happens to me when spring times rolls around and pollen comes out.

Accepted Answer

She could have a viral infection that comes back for any sort of stress reason.

You can read about upper respiratory viruses here

http://marvistavet.com/html/feline_upper_respiratory.html

You might ask your vet if the x-rays show any possibility of asthma. You can read about this here

http://www.cfa.org/articles/health/asthma.html

Sinus issues are listed as a possible problem in the breed here

And a fungal infection such as aspergillosis is a possibility too

You may need to do more testing and as cash flow is an issue you might check out Care Credit If you qualify this may work well for you.

A credit card company for health care, including veterinary care.
"With a comprehensive range of plan options, for
treatment or procedure fees from $1 to over $25,000, we offer a plan
and a low monthly payment to fit comfortably into almost every
budget." They have a zero interest program if you pay within a certain time frame and they list the vets who work with their product.

Hope this helps you!

I would love to bring her back to the vet, but the last two trips, scared her to death. And for the week we gave her the meds from the vet., she was awful and scared and would not come out for the whole day after the meds. This cat was the most friendly and happy cat before we started taking her to the vet. I'm afraid us, trying to help, is just scaring her to be more sick. But tonight, i'm listen to her making that weezing noise through her nose. Her lungs sound perfectly clear...just her nose. Should I wait a week and see if she gets better or bring into the vet again and risk her getting more scared and not eating.

Answer

You might try some Feliway cat appeasing pheromone with her to calm her down.

You can read about this here

http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/behaviortraining/a/Feliway.htm

and all sorts of sites and stores an vets carry it.

Feliway can be sprayed in the cat carrier too if you get the spray bottle.

You might consider a home visit vet if there are any in you area and this site may help you find one

If she is easily stressed it could be the upper respiratory infection issue as stress lowers the immune system.

Thanks for the above accept!
