Hi, thanks for your question. I'm sorry to hear that your dog isn't feeling well. How long has this been going on for?

Just began today about noon. My son did not know to take the food away so she continued to eat and throw up. She seems to have energy and barks regularly at the neighbors. She does go back to her bed more often to rest. I took the food away about 3 and since then she has had no food. She did get into the water. I put her outside for a few hours let her in and she immediatly threw up again.

Answer

OK, thanks for the reply. Since this has been going on for nearly 12 hours, it's certainly concerning. Because she's got a good energy level, I'm not too worried about her overall condition, but I do think that she should be seen by a veterinarian in the morning if she's not any better. For tonight, do not let her outdoors, as I suspect she may be eating grass or other plants. If the vomiting continues, or she begins to act lethargic or depressed, then I'd suggest seeking emergency care tonight, and not waiting for tomorrow.

The possible explanations could include a foreign body obstruction in the intestine, or gastroenteritis, or intestinal parasites. But regardless of the cause, severe dehydration can result, leading to major complications.

Can I continue to let her drink water?

should i keep giving her water?

Accepted Answer

If she is vomiting, I would not offer any fluids. If she goes for 3 or 4 hours with no vomiting, then small sips of water are likely to be OK. Some diluted chicken broth might be acceptable as well, if she holds down water after 4 to 6 hours.
